A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such medications must be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
