At least 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
